yarning can be messy,
why would i want to do it in counselling
the difference between talking and yarning is in the relationship. If i’ve had a rotten day and a stranger at a bus stop says, Hey, how was your day, their intention is to show politeness and friendliness. The space they are offering me is one of acknowledgement only, it is not a space for reflection or exploration. So my matched response in that space might be, Yeah not great, but thanks for asking
when I walk through the door of my home and my husband asks me the same question Hey, how was your day, he is offering a space of love and care and trust, his intention is related to my ongoing happiness and calm . So my matched response is a little more than it was for the stranger, for instance Oh that reporting just took it out of me today, I feel like I don’t know what i’m doing and no-one seems to want to help me.
when you walk into my therapy rooms and I ask Hey how was your day, I am offering you a space that can best be described (I think) in the words of Dawn Bessarab and Bridget Nd’andu ..
.. invite them to speak about particular aspects of their world and in doing so, take them to different places of interest and significance
my intention is one of exploration. Not to find out what is wrong with you (P.S. the answer is nothing, there may be a problem but it is seperate from who you are) or diagnose you or judge your thoughts as right or wrong, or hand you a list of answers. My intention is for you (the expert in your life) and me (the expert in narrative therapy) to join up to figure out what is getting in the way of you being OK, and what we could do to get it out of the way. It’s messy and uncomfortable and awkward and scary and liberating and tiresome and informative and challenging. I will ask more questions than a Stranger and I will expect more private, in depth answers. Most importantly, I will never say that you are wrong or use therapy as a form of government
if you are open to such a journey, then counselling is offered as live sessions in the Gundungurra/Tharawal (Robertson NSW) office, every 5th week in person along the Robertson – Dubbo – Bourke run, or by phone or Zoom or Teams which may require updated technology and access to the internet. Appointments are available as early as 10am Australian Eastern Standard Time (or Daylight Savings from October to April) and can finish as late as 8pm. I am also trialling some offline options with a three or seven day turnaround using Slack, email, Dropbox and snailmail, click here for more info
Cost is $185 per session for up to sixty minutes and payment is required prior to appointment. Individual rate is reduced to AUD $125 per person for holders of a current Australian Health Care Card.
